In another promising sign for Sheffield as a cycling city, commuters in Sheffield are to be encouraged to give up the car for the bike – and not to worry about the hills – reports the Sheffield Telegraph.
The city has been chosen as the first in the UK to run ‘BikeBoost’, a two-year programme offering bike loans and a support programme to 800 cyclists.
In exchange for the chance to try out cycling for free, participants undertake to cycle to work for at least 50% of the days in the challenge period of three to four weeks.

Cycle Sheffield are putting this night on because the response to a bike film night last June in Bike Week was great - they want to see if two nights a year is about right.
So get on your bike and pedal along to enjoy the films, chat with other cyclists and give us some feedback and suggestions for movies to do with cycling that you think we would or should all want to see.
Next Bike Film Night will be Monday Jun 14 2010 during Bike Week.
Video from the Darlington Media Group about encouraging women cyclists in Darlington – one of the UK cycling Demonstration Towns. Notice the Councillor with cabinet responsibility for transport. It’s about time we heard something similar from Sheffield politicians.
“I need a strong, well-looked after bike; probably something different to what I have with specialized sirrus (maybe a Mountain Bike; or ?city bike? kind of think); i would be happy to spend not more than £200-300; because I rather intend to use it on occasions when the other one is broken or I have a guest etc. No preference regarding brands.”
